Aaah…what lovely cover art! Dan Deacon took nearly three years to complete Bromst since Spiderman of the Rings–an album so full of ebullient electronic euphoric beats, layering, and rhythmI knew Bromst, a highly anticipated album for me this year,  surely could not disappoint. And I was right. For the past few weeks, in true Dan Deacon fashion, listening to his music is like getting constant epi-needles to the heart. Life awakening adrenaline rush. It’s like Animal Collective fused with a full orchestra on speed. And lots of it.

Prepare to get your consciousness raised.

Dan Deacon has 12 total releases both LP and EP but the one that really got him on the radar was Spiderman of the Rings back in ’07. Unlike many DJs in this industry, who mainly started by experimenting with turntables, mixers, CDs, vinyl or scratching which eventually turned their hobby into a career (or maybe still a hobby, but a paid one at that), Deacon got an education in this field. Born in Baltimore Maryland, Deacon attended the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College in Purchase, New York and played the tuba and guitar in various bands. Deacon finished  his graduate studies in electro-acoustic and computer music composition. He studied under composer/conductor Joel Thome–a Grammy Award recipient for Best Rock Instrumental in ’94 for Frank Zappa’s Universe.

Unsurprisingly, it’s very easy to see his education and his influences both in life and the industry having affected his music. Everything Dan Deacon does sounds impossibly intricate and overflows with instrumentation, synths, beats, bass lines, and xylophone love. Aaaah who doesn’t appreciate xylophone love!? At the same time, if you listen enough you’ll start to notice how technical and calculated the sound is, like an orchestra or a composition would be. Deacon is the modern maestro of our time. Bromst is a true testament to this. This 11 track LP never fails to amaze, surprise, enlighten, and inspire. Filled with unrelenting beats, heartfelt lyrics layered with vocal percussion, and ubiquitous xylophone dings, Deacon creates the most eclectic fusion of modern pop, symphony, experimental orchestral noise, and electronic goodness, creating the unmistakable Dan Deacon sound.

I remember seeing Dan Deacon at the Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle back in September last year. As seen from my photo above, the room was lit, which was a total surprise but that didn’t create shyness from the audience. He got us all to form a circle and we had DANCE OFFS! Basically one person would go into the circle, and “tag-team” someone else to switch when Deacon told us to. It was the most fun, batshit crazy show I’ve been to in a long time. His live shows are unforgettable because the music is soooo fast that you can’t really do anything except for GOING OFF YOUR ROCKER CRAZY!!! DANCE ‘TIL YOU DROP!!! My friend Mark and I danced our asses off to the point where people thought we were joking, like making fun of hardcore dancers or something, but we weren’t. We recruited some fans around us who proceeded to be batshit crazy and dance like mad. Yeah. We had fans at the Dan Deacon show. BAAAAJJAJA!

Yeah, so make sure you see Deacon on his upcoming tour. If his albums don’t prove to you how great of a composer he is, his supra-energetic shows with his table top full of pedals, a sine wave generator, vocoder and casio blasting through the PA, completed by a makeshift light board wi various bulbs and green skull strobe light and surrounding fans will make you appreciate just how awesome this guy is. Deacon is prepping a 15 person ensemble for the tour. Holy christ. I cannot IMAGINE Bromst sounding any better but with a 15 person live band!??! SHIT GET YOUR TICKETS NOW!!! BRAP BRAP BRAP!!!

I give Dan Deacon – Bromst a 9.5 out of 10!
