Wow I am surprised that there is another one this year after the inauguration of the AWP went so sour last year. America doesn’t NEED more festivals for crying out loud, especially one’s like these located close to pretty much every large and accessible city within 100km radius that host 100+ bands a day anyways.

And this, THIS IS THE BEST THEY COULD COME UP WITH?! These are all recycled bands, not that Fleet Foxes, YYY’s, the National, Flying Lotus, etc etc aren’t good bands…but by the time All Points West Festival happens on July 31st – Aug 2nd at Liberty State Park, everyone would be too tired and too happy with having gone to Coachella, SXSW, Sasquatch, Bonnaroo, Lolla, and saving up for Austin City Limits, Bumbershoot to even care.

Sorry but does anyone else like this festival or this year’s lineup?! The only group on there I’d even consider going for is the Pharcyde. Everyone else is already on the bills of large better, and more matured festivals. Maybe in a few years AWP will be something worth going to.

Gaaah yes I know Kanye did the VH1 Storytellers nearly a month ago, but I never had the time to comment on it. And, with one of my papers handed in today at 3:58 before the 4:00 deadline, I decided to take a break. Amongst movies, music, and dance parties, I re-watched Kanye’s performance on VH1 and it is sooo much better than the first time, which was already pretty rad.

I relish the fact that an artist of this generation has finally re-appropriated the terms entertainer, performer, and artist. All we see and have seen in the past is just the stage, artist, and equipment. Music was just music for these bands. But, then you see people like Owen Pallett of Final Fantasy, Rufus Wainwright, Simian Mobile Disco, and Daft Punk–amongst many others–project their music with more than just the simple violin, guitar, mic, and decks and mixers.

Kanye West, I think, is one of those artists that have taken music and live performances to the next level. I remember seeing his Glow in the Dark a year or so ago, and it was JUST Kanye on stage. No supporting rappers. No MC on the decks. Nothing. Just him and this ridiculous stage illuminating the journey through space that we were going to share with Kanye. He was super stylin’ as usual, wearing one of his millions of sunglasses, rad kicks, and a khaki colored outfit which he refused to take off despite how much it was making him sweat. It was amazing. Never have I seen a hip-hop show break the conventional boundaries of what a live show should look like. But then again, Kanye is a contemporary hip-hop which allows him to do what he does with his shows.

Prince is one of my top artists of all time. Magnificent entertainer, unrelentingly tireless performer, and probably one of the best guitarists and artists of our time. I remember how I welled up inside, when Coachella last year announced that Prince would be on the bill. I remember my excitement, waiting in the shadows of Portishead’s immaculate performance, knowing that Prince would be on next.

Though he was late, making everyone wait nearly an hour, with jeers here and there about how he was probably just eating cereal in the back–these were not true fans–restless I was not. I made my way from the back of the grounds to within 25 feet of the stage, nurturing my sides with my elbows and contorting my body through the already condensed and populous crowd of 50, 000. I finally made it into a good space, enough room to dance, enough room to breath, and was with a good crowd of people with whom I felt a connected excited electricity with.

Then he came on and my dream of seeing Prince live was realised. Never would I have imagined I’d be able to see Prince so close, for so cheap, for so long. He played his heart out, covering songs from the Beatles and Radiohead. He played above and beyond the time constraints Coachella organizers allowed for, claiming he’ll pay the fine. FROM THIS POINT FORWARD, THIS IS PRINCE’S HOUSE. No one could disagree. I was crying. Crying and singing and dancing and repeating it for over two hours. Everyone else around me was singing along with tears streaking down. It was such a memorable overwhelming moment to experience a Living Legend, Prince.

People hate on Prince all the time. But these people just don’t understand why people like me adore him so much, why he’ll go down in the Hall of Fame as one of the Best.

Prince is to release his 3CD album, MPLSoUND, LOtUSFLOW3R, and Exile via Target on March 29th for TWELVE DOLLARS. Oh. My. God. I cannot wait to get my hands on a solid copy. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

In the meanwhile, watch his “Ol’ Skool Company” performance off MPLSoUND on Jay Leno. Not gonna lie, I got a bit aroused. This man is amazing. Respect.

Ok so I’ve been looping my Michael Jackson discography lately this week. Fantastic paper writing music I tell ya. One of my favorite MJ songs is “Liberian Girl”. In case you don’t recognize the song name, I’m sure you’d recognize the loop in this song which has been sampled countless times up ’til now.

And I think the video is really rad. How many celebrities can you count?

Ok guys the updates will be much more sparse in the next 4 weeks. My final exams are coming up and after that, I am as free as a bird for I have graduated! Anyways, a cool band I’ve been listening to lately (thanks Natalie!) is The Ropes. I watched their “Kitty Get Down” video and was hooked! I immediately bought their Be My Gun EP which was recently released, as well as their freshman EPs Cry to the Beat. They are a NYC based duo that consists of Sharon Shy (vocals/bass) and Toppy (drums/guitar). The Ropes are inspired by water and headphones. Water and headphones, they say, are all they need, water and headphones, are their staples.

Hey y’all! Unforts I was unable to make SXSW but my friend Miyuru, an up and coming DJ here in Edmonton that has residency at the Starlite Room for Surely Temple Thursdays is making me uber jealous by being there. Good thing he’s agreed to give me (us) some updates on his shows/experience day to day! Woooohoo!

Thursday & Friday: Liver disease is imminent.

I admit I’m a SXSW virgin and this year was my first time at the festival.  I had gone to CMJ in NYC this past October, so I knew what to expect somewhat as SXSW can be likened to CMJ just on a much much larger scale.

My first two days, I was somewhat keen on planning out my days and making sure to be at X venue at Y time.  The last two days though, I gave up.  Friday and Saturday are much harder to keep up with, because there are many more important shows to hit that overlap with each other, and the locals are out in full-force meaning long lines at most venues.  Even your badge doesn’t help you out as much as you wish.

I didn’t even get into the Rachel Ray party after waiting 3 hours.  But that’s ok, I met a million people in line who were supercool.

This post is going to be very different.  I could tell you about all the acts that I’ve seen in the past couple days but really, there was nothing much out of the ordinary during the shows, except Metallica at Stubbs and Kanye’s appearance at the Fader Fort and Perez’s afterparty (both of which I didn’t make).

So, what did I do the last two days?  I want to get this all down before I forget.

Wednesday: This has to have been the worst day of SXSW ever!

Our day started off a little late and we ditched out on Rachel Ray’s party, meaning no free food or free drinks, I guess I’d rather sleep in. Instead, we hit Maggie Mae’s to see Yelle. Like a lot of the venues here in Austin, Maggie Mae’s is really really awesome. From the street it looks like any other unsuspecting bar, but once you’re inside you start to realise how big it is – 3 stages in fact (one on the ground level, one on the second floor, and a third on the rooftop). The vibe here is amazing as most venues literally pour out onto the streets so onlookers can enjoy the shows just as much as anyone else.

Yelle was ridiculous and dazzled the crowd with her fierce energy and oh-so-cute French accent! I love watching her and I’m glad I caught her because I missed her at Coachella. No new material in her set, and it still ends with A Cause Des Garcons which turns into the Tepr remix, all live, which is really cool and a hell of a dance party.

Tuesday: Too Many Parties–Kid Sister + Flosstradamus

Today I landed in San Antonio and got a ride to Austin and the first thing we did was pick up our badges and badges for the PureVolume party. Then we hit the Art Disaster party which was starting to fill up as they were giving out free vodka and screen-printing t-shirts on the fly for everyone. I saw the Minx Disaster or something like that, a local band from Austin which seemed to have a following judging from the crowd. Looking at the lineup there’s no band named that but I swear that’s what they said!  Shunda K of Yo! Majesty was there between acts too as well with an insane dancer. After that we decided to hit the Rock You (sp?) party, where we caught Kid Sister and Flosstradamus absolutely kill it! With her album coming out real soon, there was a lot of new material to be heard starting with the new single “Get Fresh”. The track that stuck out the most was a new one produced by Yuksek (!), which makes me wonder who else contributed to the album. Datarock was playing afterwards but we decided to split to hit the PureVolume party for free beers.
