hi everyone! it’s been a little while since my last post and since then i have been catching up and listening to soooo much music and there is soooo much good music out right now it’s ridiculous. a bunch of new albums, a bunch of a new up and comers…but this post is about what i’ve been obsessed with lately…new and old…but within the year or so. this post is filled with good beats. trust. let’s start with the rapture’s incredible new single from their forthcoming album! have been dancing to it all morning since hearing it.

MP3: The Rapture – How Deep Is Your Love

i got into big boi‘s latest album, sir lucious leftfoot, pretty late but since hearing it i haven’t been able to stop. having been disappointed with his previous lp i just didn’t think something like this would come from him. fantastic fantastic beats. it’s good hip-hop with catchy lyrics that isn’t all just kanye and jay-z shit you know? in the sense that the lyrical content of Ye and Hov has less relevance than News of the World nowadays. sure, their beats sometimes are awesome like sampling Otis Redding in their new single “Otis” for upcoming lp watch the throne, but their lyrics are just so horrible to listen these days (like rhyming D’ior Homme with homie) that it’s refreshing to hear tracks like “Tangerine”, “Turns Me On”, “Hustle Blood”, “Back Up Plan”, and my favorite, “Shine Blockas” from Big Boi where the beats of the rhythm and the cadence of his delivery is just sooo sooo soo good.  it’s light enough to give you that pop encouragement to dance and get down and dirt, lyrically interesting to keep your mental in check. such a fantastic album.

MP3: Big Boi ft. Gucci Mane – Shine Blockas

flight facilities is a group from sydney, australia. that’s all i know about them jajaja at the moment. their track “crave you” is gettin’ pretty big here and their release of the crave you ep with a bunch of remixes from the likes of cassian, c90’s, ted and francis, was back in april and i’ve just gotten a chace to to listen to it now and it’s quite good. so i’m sharing the original and my favorite remix done by the c90’s.

MP3: Flight Facilities ft. Giselle Roselli – Crave You

MP3: Flight Facilities ft. Giselle Roselli – Crave You (C90’s Remix)

bag raiders are a house duo also from sydney. they’ve only had one album release but have done a ton of eps released from the formidble fool’s gold label and bang gang…as well as having done remixes for cut copy, kid sister, and midnight juggernauts. their track, “shoot stars” was released in 2009 and is what got them noticed in australia. such an amazing pop track.

adrian lux is a dj/producer from sweden. his most popular track “teenage crime” gets quite a bit of play here in australia and errrybody knows it and gets their groove on. it’s a good one.

MP3: Adrian Lux – Teenage Crime

lastly, i want to share one of the greatest songs of this year. yes, that’s right. a pretty hefty claim but to me, it’s true. as y’all probs know, fleet foxes released their new album this year (and are currently on tour), helplessness blues. it is another heartfelt soul belting lp and it just warms my body like a cleanse. “grown ocean” is the most inspiring track, i feel, on the album…and of this year for me. every time i listen to it, i feel like i’m in the mountains looking at a never ending sunset driving through the sky with the clouds as my road. windows down. the title from this post is derived from this song. turn it up guys.

currently, i am in the warmth that is mexico! have been travelling around here for roughly a three weeks now and i have a lot more to explore! before that, as y’all might know, i was at burning man and made a west coast to east coast roadtrip out of it…camping in as many national parks as possible, being with nature, doing amazing hikes, and reconnecting. since my first burn, my music expansion became exponential. the new music i was listening to was an integral part of my travels in america too…a lot of music in this mixtape i was listening to when the sun was setting or rising, when i was cruising on a long and winding road down a mountain, when i was just being.

the music in this mixtape means a lot to me and i hope y’all can feel it. there’s a mix of all of the new influences i was introduced to, as well as some old school love. there’s everything from grime dubstep drum and bass to indie rock pop. thanks for waiting for so long for it to come out!!! like with all the mixtapes before…it’s really important to listen to it in order. from what i gather, most of you guys have itunes, which is shit for my mixtapes ’cause it still doesn’t play it in order even if i renumber the tags myself. please click on the playlist file, so it plays the files in order. using vlc, mediamonkey, songbird, or winamp is the best đŸ™‚

playlist after the jump! get ready to get GRIMEY!

wow. it’s been a loooong time since i’ve posted but i have good reasons. since my last post, i have had one of the most amazing life changing life rewarding awesome epic all possible positive adjectives at burning man. a festival that everyone should experience at least once (and after that, as many times as humanly possible). since my last post, i have embarked on a journey starting in vancouver, canada all the way down the west coast until san fran camping, hiking, existing within nature…all the way to new york where i am temporarily pro chillin’ until i leave to continue my love for travel and engulfment of culture further south in the latin americas.

since my last post i have been blessed with amazing people that have come into my life and introduced me to many things…especially good music. so, this post…is just a tease. OOOOOoooooOOOa tease. oh yes. i have a bigger post coming up with photos aaaaaaaaaand i think, one of the best mixtapes to come out on atm, EVA. hope y’all had an awesome thanksgiving and enjoy these songs, pump up the volume, and keep it dirty for me until the mixtape is out!

what an epic epic weekend. meg montréal had an incredible lineup, especially for the boat. osheaga had a disturbingly amazing lineup which made this horribly organised festival all the more worth while. so yeah, before i talk about the  music, i wanna talk about the osheaga festival.

what mainly pissed me off was this whole “green stage” thing…why not have a GREEN FESTIVAL?!?! oooooh, one stage! ONE! raw/vegan/vegetarian green food stand! great way to really show how committed one is to the enviro movement. what is even WORSE is the amount of trash left lying around because we had to walk minutes just to get to a garbage can. the state of the grass and grounds around the toilettes was horrendous as the one picnic table became a dumpster! and that fountain that was nearby that was spritzing water…for what purpose!?!?! to cool people off, sure, but running it at that level for the entire two days is the biggest waste of water ever. why not have a water fountain that people can USE to REFILL our water bottles?!?! instead of charging 5$ for people to buy new ones. we have such good LOCAL food and produce, good LOCAL vendors here yet none of it was represented in the midst of the digustingly expensive hot dogs at la fleur, beers at budweiser, and even fresh fruit, chips, and water at the smaller vendors.

the only good thing about osheaga outside of it’s incredible lineup this year is the fact that you were allowed to bring in your own food and water. so my friend and i made delicious salmon arugula and baby tomato salad along with egg sandwiches and saved ourselves from unhappy stomachs and wallets. yes the music is important but, ultimately it is the experience as well, and at 75 bucks or 150 for both days, it isn’t less affordable when you  have to spend more than 30 bucks each day on little food or drink to sustain yourself. 5 dollars for a hot dog?!?! voyons donc c’mon! though osheaga isn’t as large or as aged as coachella or bonnaroo, the food there is filling and well proportioned, there are good options for all types of diets, and NOTHING was at least 10 dollars like it is at osheaga. the corps and sponsors rent out the space only to make more money by ripping us off. fuck dis shit! as snoop dogg would say.

i look forward to the day when osheaga will continue to have good music, be true to their environmental initiatives, and support local independent quebec food and produce!

but, enough of the ranting! overall, the weekend was faaaantastic for great music and dancing. so, recap of meg boat and osheaga weekend after the jump!

so, lots of things have happened since my last serious post. the montrĂ©al jazz fest. tons of shows in between. lots more coming up! i’ve got die antwoord (YESSSSSSSSSS!) tomors, meg montrĂ©al and osheaga are coming up, and i am once again heading off to new york for a week and along the way i will  be checking out flaming lips in central park! annnnnd the hard tour in nyc which features m.i.a. and a bunch of crazy fun other artists! i will mos defs be covering meg montrĂ©al but i dunno about the rest.

oh fiiiiiiiiiiiiiinally! this mixtape has been soooo long due. like for real. the original playlist for this was made probably two months ago but obviously since then i’ve been hearing a lot of new artists so the playlist is now what it is. i had to put this out before it got too crazy. there are 40 tracks so unfortunately, like last time, i had to convert all the songs to a lower bit rate just to save space and upload it to mediafire…the mp3’s that i offer are of their original quality (very good) but within the mixtape it is all converted.

this mixtape is amazing. not gonna lie. unforts i couldn’t fit ALL the new stuff like lcd soundsystem, ratatat, etc etc but managed to put some amazing tracks from new albums released by m.i.a., crystal castles…and more. there is everything in here from minimal, techno, hip-hop, rap, house, haaaaaaaaaaauss, d’n’b, experimental to psychedelic, soft-pop, israeli goodness, and xyz genre jajaja.

it’s come to my realisation that for those of you who use itunes, the playlist doesn’t quite work and you’d have to renumber them manually just so the tracks play in their proper order…maybe some of you do this, maybe some of you don’t (because you use players like mediamonkey (woohoo!) or songbird (woohoo!))…but i DO encourage you guys to listen to my mixtapes IN ORDER. most of my time spent making them is well, doing the write up, but most importantly, is picking and choosing what goes in the mixtape and how to fit it in…if it isn’t played in order, well i could just pick a bunch of songs i like and zip it up and let it be that. but that’s no fun and so impersonal. i put a lot of love and effort into these mixtapes so i hope that you guys get to hear it the way it’s supposed to be heard! soooo…enough rambling, let’s dance! playlist after the jump!

p.s. happy belated to a special mr. taha!

I am going to combine my Coachella recap with my mixtape because I will save a ton of time. Plus, I only wanna talk about my top shows anyways and those artists are mostly featured in this mixtape. I named this mixtape a while back and decided to keep it. I had a little help from Kanye jajaja. Anyways, this really WAS the warmest winter I have ever had. The mixtape I was wanting to put out a month ago is significantly different now that I’ve come back from Coachella having heard so many awesome tracks as well as having had the time to do some quick updating on my music library. Check out the quick recap in the previous post here!

The Warmest Winter is gonna make you daaaaaance! And it has some pretty lovely slow moments as well. It is filled with everything from jazz, blues, funk, rock to italo-disco, pop, progressive, dubstep, d’n’b and every other genre of electronica you can think of. Like all my other mixtapes, I put a lot of soul into it, and it truly is AWESOME. Oh yes. I had a super tough time cutting it so that it would be a certain size after compression and like always I am leaving so much out that I wanted to share…and now with albums from Ratatat, LCD Soundsystem, etc etc, a lot is definitely left out of this one since this tape was made almost a month ago. But the next tape will cover it. Alors, a caveat: Some of the songs I had to compress because the total size was too large and it was going over my 200MB limit for mediafire…so I apologize in advance for ruining the high quality of some of the songs…I hate to do that but mediafire is the host of choice for myself and many of you. Nonetheless, it is still amazing!

After the jump for the playlist!

Coachella 2010.
Wow. What a great year.
Like my flatmate was telling me today, at Coachella and other great festivals alike, you just start imagining strings connecting all of us. Strings of bodies from all over this world bound and connected by music for this magnificent weekend each year. Coachella is a world unto itself. This weekend is filled with good music, vibrant energy, worldly generosity and with the help of drugs or not, there is this feeling of inexplicable happiness, indescribable joy and overwhelming emotion when you’re with all these fucking people, seeing bands, letting go, and one way or another we are swept away by Coachella’s breathtaking panorama, the sunsets, the sounds, the sights, and the synchronicity of what we’re sharing together. And this brings me to think again of how this was my best coachella yet. Best best best yet. I had the fucking blast of my life compared to when I went in 2008 and it was because well, obviously the killer lineup, but as with most things in life, it’s about the people that you share this amazing weekend with.

Stay tuned for my mixtape coming soon featuring a lot of Coachella artists đŸ™‚

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Kanye has a new website and it is pretty solid. Glad his blog is back because it truly is such a well rounded blog and it introduced me to sooo much shit. This is a new video of his track “Coldest Winter” which is off the 2008 album 808’s and Heartbreak! Hard to believe that this was only released two years ago.

So Pitchfork did this great interview with Die Antwoord who as y’all know I am now obsessed with. ZEF SIDE! You can hear their entire album streaming on their website here. DO IT! IT IS AWESOME!!!

Long story short: Die Antwoord are a completely manic rap-rave group from South Africa that have gained more than 30,000 fans on Facebook in about two weeks, thanks to a couple amazing music videos. Their overall style is called “zef,” which roughly translates to “common” and is typified by “blue eyeliner, bleached hair, sweat bands, and cars with overly powerful sound systems.” Because of group leaders Ninja and Yo-Landi Vi$$er’s prior involvement in conceptual hip-hop projects, the group has been met with claims of inauthenticity. Are they paying tribute to or making fun of zef culture? (For a longer version of this story, check out our recent article, “Who the Hell Are Die Antwoord?”)

So we sent an e-mail to the address on their website and someone called Dirk the Oracle got back to us saying Ninja and Yo-Landi might answer some written-out questions. We sent some questions. They wrote us back. In the following interview, Ninja and Yo-Landi talk about their surging fame, their idea for an upcoming Die Antwoord film, Katy Perry, smoking weed out of coconut bongs, and so much more:

Pitchfork: When did you realize Die Antwoord were reaching a big international audience via the internet?

Die Antwoord: We noticed on the 3rd of February. It was a full moon. We just stared at the computer screen. We started getting about 1000 emails per day. When it got to 5000 mails on day five, I just gave up, lay down on the floor and looked at the roof. It was like tripping on acid. But now every time we wake up it still won’t go away.

Pitchfork: Did a lot of people start calling you?

DA: Yes, a lot of people suddenly like me a lot. Me and Yo-Landi have changed our phone numbers.

Pitchfork: Why do you think Die Antwoord has broken through more than your previous rap groups like MaxNormal.TV?

DA: The other rap albums we made were a bit stupid. Then we tapped into our inner zef and discovered Die Antwoord and became next-level.

Pitchfork: Was there one moment of epiphany when you saw the potential of, as you say, your inner zef and the potential of Die Antwoord?

DA: Ninja, Yo-Landi, and DJ Hi-Tek were at a rave at Ninja’s parents’ house when they discovered Die Antwoord. We actually are making a high-energy, totally next-level, rap-rave feature film about this called The Answer. We would compare it to District 9, but just with more rave and more rap. This feature film is part of the reason why some people are flying Ninja and Yo-Landi to L.A. in two weeks’ time.

Pitchfork: What is the movie about?

DA: The plot it this: Ninja, Yo-Landi and DJ Hi-Tek live in a kak little white hood called Sunnyside (the hood in the “Zef Side” clip). Ninja has this big plan to throw a fat-ass rave at his parents’ house. But Ninja’s parents don’t trust him to look after the house while they go to Sun City. Eventually, Ninja manipulates his parents into trusting him enough to let him look after the house. Just after Ninja’s parents fuck off to Sun City on holiday, Ninja forces Yo-Landi to steal money from her mom to hook up a fuck-off heavy sound system, a smoke machine, a strobe light, a phunky 3D visual mix on VHS to play on the TV in the chill room, tiger balm, party decorations, dop and a lot of zol. Only about eight people come to the rave, and everything is going pretty cool ’til Yo-Landi starts to fuck out from smoking too much of the coconut bong that somebody mixed with tik. This final scene is going be sort of like this hallucinogenic erotic nightmare that Yo-Landi experiences. The end of film is actually just going to be the full-length music video of “Beat Boy”. The lyrics to “Beat Boy” describe this scene to the T. It’s going to be pretty next-level.

Pitchfork: Are you guys going to play yourselves in the film or get famous actors to play you?

DA: We starring in the film. Fokkit, this is our big chance. But maybe if other people had to star as us: Yo-Landi could be played by Charlize Theron and Ninja could be played by Bruce Willis.

Pitchfork: What do you say to people who think you’re making fun of zef culture?

DA: Uh. We are zef culture.

I’ve already been exposed to such great music this year and it’s not even been a full two months! And now that I am home for two weeks I’ve caught up on a lot of music as well as posts I’ve been falsely promising for months. Oops! Anyways, by far the best LP I’ve heard this year is without a doubt by the wonderful Four Tet a.k.a. Keiran Hebdan, the Londonite who perfected his album while having residency at Plastic People. His first single “Love Cry” remains one of  my favorite songs released last year and on his recently released LP, There Is Love In You. So, this mixtape is named after the awesomeness that is Four Tet but is not fully composed of Four Tet themed music. This mixtape is full of everything, the Balearic, in a sense. The lo-Fi hip-hop goodness of Gonjasufi all the way to the classic tunes of Billy Idol. As with all my mixtapes, it’s gonna make you groove =)
