This list is definitely the smallest and less encompassing than the others simply because I’ve been revisiting a lot of old school hip-hop, rap, etc albums from the 90’s. Also, since this is my last part of of the Decade’s list, and it’s already the middle of February…going through my music library was definitely more of a skim…so sorry if you’re screaming at the computer wondering where certain artists are…jajaja 😉

I also decided to go over my Top Shows as well. Back in Edmonton, I averaged maybe 4/5 shows per month depending on the season…and now in Montréal I average that every 1/2 weeks! So a lot of names on this list will be moreso the last 3 years…shows that are much more recent and those beyond that were obviously unforgettable. I wish I had the time do to Top Shows according to genre because they really don’t compare to each other…but I did my best!

***Finally I am posting these decade end lists. Gaaah I love and hate lists. They enlighten me towards new music yet at the same time they’re ridiculously subjective. From one point to the next an album can be the best and not depending on the season, the weather, my emotions, whether I’m under the influence, yada yada yada. Because of all this, the numbers on my list aren’t a ranking system of worst to best—because I think they’re all equally fantastic—they’re simply a form of organization. But, a few times on the lists I will put a clear marker on the artist/album that I feel truly outranks the rest. It’s only here where I exercise a bit of hypocrisy.

I know I’ve left hundreds and hundreds of artists out. Making a “Top 10” list per sub-genre for the decade is trifling, I know. It really should be “Top 100” per sub genre. Every day I keep remembering ones I should add but I have too much music and too little time. I did my best with what I had and what I remember and the time I had! You’ll notice that a lot of the artists are from the last 5 years and that’s because my mecca of music is back home. Home home. Like where I was born jaja. So…sorry for the lack of early 2000 albums. =)

I also dislike one shot lists! You simply can’t compare down-tempo artists to dubstep artists, etc. So, I tried to organize artists into the genres I felt fit them best as opposed to putting them all in the same pool. But obviously some artists mix into the other genres or were put there even though they have a very specific genre of their own (avant-garde, balearic, etc etc). Gaaah and genre is so subjective as well. Bear with me and keep all this in mind! A lot of these artists are featured in my NYE and NYD mixtapes or have been blogged about! So check the mixtapes out or do a quick search on ATM if you feel like more sampling.

Other than that, happy reading and check out Part I and Part II!

Hey guys, so sorry for be absent lately…and my Best of Lists STILL aren’t fully up jajajaj oops. I’ve been super busy lately and just haven’t had time. I’ve been behind on everything and by now I can write a Best of the Year so far list with all the good music I’ve been listening to jajaja. As to when the rest of my lists will be posted, I think it’ll be another two weeks when I actually have a break! This week I wanna start off with an already classic of 2010 and a classic in general.

• Four Tet: A few months back on my last post I was so fucking stoked for There Is Love In You to come out. He released a mini EP which contained his killer single “Love Cry” as well as a very abstract jazz piece called “Our Bells” which isn’t included in the LP. I’ve given TILIY about six listens now. The first listen blew. my. mind. Ugh so effin’ good with an opening track like “Angel Echoes”…leading into the dark beats of “Love Cry”. The more I listen the better the album gets. The tribal beats, the warping build-ups, and the steady backdrop rhythms are always forcing you forward, pushing you on. It’s the kinda music that is always good, no matter where and no matter what. I don’t have to be in the mood to listen to Four Tet. He puts my in the mood. Each wave is a persuasion and before you know if your head is filled with random bits and pieces of Hebden’s art, always floating…love cryyy looove crrrry loooove crrryyy….ugh this album is so good it makes me want to cry (Taha too). Maybe that’s why there’s a track called “Love Cry”…Hebden knew all along that this album is an opening and reciprocation of emotions: unfolding, circling, echoing, reversing…all names of tracks on this brilliant LP.

A+++++++++++++++++++++++

• Nas: The Illmatic is the greatest 40 minutes in hip-hop history. I don’t think there is a sentence that sums it up as well as this one. I’ve been in a Nas phase all last week and this classic LP was on repeat the most…this is one of my favorite tracks.

Best of the Decade Part II: Indie is to come! If you haven’t already check out my Best of the Decade Part I: Electronic! Anyways, this week I share songs by:

•Reflection Eternal, one part Talib Kweli, another part DJ Hi-Tek. They released their first album Train of Thought all the way back in 2000. TEN YEARS LATER they’re coming out with another album, Revolutions Per Minute due in MARCH! HOOOOOOOOOOOOOORAH! They’ve so far released two singles “Back Again” and “Just Begun”. The latter is my favorite and features Mos Def, Jay Electronica and J. Cole!

•Clubfeet, a band from Australia (according to their myspace). A few years back they dropped Gold on Gold which pretty much scanned under the radar of EVERYONE, even their AMAZING pop single “Teenage Suicide”. I have no idea why. It’s smooth pop. Soft dance music. It’s cute and joyful but not too overbearing. I thought it was a pretty solid album with other singles such as “Count Your Lovers” and “BrightLightsBigCity”. After this LP they dropped off the planet…they haven’t made anything since and from the state of their myspace they must be on a hiatus of some sort…If I had a Best Tracks of the Decade or anything remotely as ambitious…this song would be on it.

***So I have my top lists compiled, I just haven’t been able to fully write it out yet. And since I will be in New York for New Year’s, my top lists will not be out until I get back. Super sorry! I am super excited for y’all to read it still! And within my mixtapes which I DID finish (phewf) are a lot of my favorites of the year and of the decade! Have a great new years and enjoy the mixtapes! Stay tuned for my top lists within two weeks!***

Hope everyone had a good new year’s! To be, it’s usually just like any other day. I don’t like the hype that NYE brings like any other major “let’s get drunk” holiday but I decided to change that this year. So whether you’re like me in the past and took it cool yesterday and chilled out, this mixtape is still for you. Relax. And if you’re like me yesterday (I am writing about myself in the future but I am sure I will be feeling this way) and partied, and are nursing physical pains all over, this mixtape is DEFS for you. Grab some tea/coffee, go for a run/swim, and decompress with some amazing chill out tunes from this year and the past decade!

Alright y’all. This mixtape is pretty sick. Not gonna lie. In it, lies some favorite tracks of mine throughout the decade as well as constantly looped tracks of this year! Unforgettable club hits, street bangers, and undeground smashes! This is a mixtape meant for pre-party, pre-drinking, and pre-PAAAAAAAAAAAAIN! I hope your home/car/headphones has a lot of BASS (how low can you go)!

You will need it.

GET READY TO DANCE BITCHEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!

This has been so long overdue it’s not even funny. This mixtape was probably made a few months ago with a few tweaks here and there…and I wanted to make more changes as every week brings new music and would work so well in this mixtape but alas, no more procrastination! <Clear the Runway> is pretty awesome. Not gonna lie. It has a some songs from my previous mixtape but no worries, it remains Awesome. Perfect for the weekend. Body movin’ body movin’ we be gettin’ down and you know we’re crush groovin’.

Download: Mixtape – Clear the Runway

Track list:

01 Curren$y & Wiz Khalifa – Car Service

Saw these guys at B.B. Kings in NYC along with Raekwon, Kid Cudi, Jadakiss, and Styles P. Defs the highlight of the show…more so than Raekwon. Who despite being super sick and barely being able to speak, showed up anyways, and called himself a “real nigga” ’cause of that. Yes. Yes. Too bad it was a super disappointing performance of under 60 minutes. Oh well. Curren$y and Wiz TORE SHIT UP! Along with Jada and Styles P. Shit. All for twelve pieces. Thank you OnSmash and NahRight. You guys fuckin’ rule.

02 Drake – Best I Ever Had

Y’all know my obsession for Drake. Seriously if his mixtapes So Far Gone and Property of October didn’t already leave you completely satisfied, as well as the “Forever” track featuring Eminem, Lil’ Wayne, and Kanye, well, you need to get your priorities straight! This boy is seriously blowing up! Not even an album and already he’s got a Grammy nomination. Watch out for some crazy Drake mania in the two zero one oh. This is his best song.  Hands down.

03 Spank Rock – Loose

Off the Bangers and Cash EP. So dirty it’s right. COP IT NOW!

04 Trouble Andrew ft. Diplo – Run, Hide

Not the biggest fan of Trouble Andrews, but this song is pretty sick.

05 Modeselektor ft. TTC – 2000007

Aaaaah my favorite German electronic artists. WHy oh WHYYY aren’t they more well known. It makes me angry. Yet at the same time I’m happy that I have them all to myself…well and a few others. They’ve already released two albums, Happy Birthday and Hello Mom which are ridiculously amazing and seriously unrecognized. They are amazing live. I can’t wait to hear a new album, which is hopefully in the works?

06 Moderat – A New Error

Modeselektor + Apparat. In case you didn’t know. Two huge German powerhouse electronic artists come together and made easily one of the best albums this year, self-titled Moderat. Electronic music, though rising, is continually under-represented! Errrrrbody is all up Indie’s ass with the St. Vincent, Dirty Projectors, and Animal Collective. Sure these albums are great (they really are). But electronic music in the decades and end of year lists are seriously on the back burner. Shit. Moderat is easily in the tops in the decade and end of year for me.

07 Paskal – Sweet Settings (Original Mix)

Yet another German electronic artist. This is pretty much all I know. I can’t find an ounce of info on the guy that’s not in German! Bah! Mais, on s’en fiche! I don’t know if he will have an album coming out soon but DO DO DO cop the Sweet Settings record. Fantastic smooth house in just six minutes. Awesome.

08 Siriusmo – Nights Off

Another German powerhouse DJ. I swear I don’t do racial profiling when I look for music! Somehow everything I end up liking a lot ends up being German…or British jaja. En tout cas, Siriusmo is from Berlin and is signed to BoyzNoise Records. He has a bunch of records out but I only started listening to him after hearing Body Language Vol.8 which was mixed by MODESELEKTOR! GAAH! If you’re a fan of Kompakt releases, the Kitsuné releases…and so forth, get Body Language releases now!!! It is a compilation released by Get Physical, a wicked wicked label housing artists such as M.A.N.D.Y., Noze, and Booka Shade. The BL‘s and Siriusmo’s albums are all you’re gonna get from him because he won’t perform live. Apparently due to conflicting interests. Hmm. Fun fact: he is a pretty great graffiti artist. Respek.

Mmmm mmm mmmmmmmmmm. Merrill Beth Nisker, or as we all know her, Peaches, the foul-mouthed, androgynous, dick, tits, and all, has wowed the Montréal crowd once again at the Métropolis. Sporting capes, donning skin colored skin tight jump suits, and a flashing clit, Peaches is true to her own hype. She fuckin’ rocks. With her cock out. For real. I am quite surprised that dildos did not make an appearance throughout the show. At least fake boobies did! Hooorah fake boobies! But first, a lady quite deserving of being a Peaches opener…Amanda Blank!

Live in Show: Peaches with Amanda Blank
@ le Métropolis (MTL; 17 11 09)

I first saw Amanda Blank when she toured with Trouble Andrew and Santigold. Regrettably, I only saw her perform for 15-20 minutes due to my usual and unsurprisingly-me tardiness. What I did see though, was a female fierceness that can only come from women that self-empowered and confidant. Once again, she delivered a big fuck you performance. She makes it. She takes it. And godddddddddddd do we feel it in our pants when she does.

Alright folks, the updates are gonna start to be a bit more regular now. Sorry for such big gaps in between actual happenings but I’m trying my best to get them out to you as quickly as I can. Anyways, below are some songs that are HUUUUGE for me right now. Check ’em out.

↓Four Tet recently released a short EP-ish thing with two tracks, this, and “Our Bells” which is also pretty awesome though in an eerier way. “Love Cry” is gonna be huge in the electronic world. These are legends, friends. And I think with this, they’re baaaAAAck!

MP3: Four Tet – Love Cry

↓To be honest, I’ve never been a huge fan of Tiësto. Every time people go nuts for the guy, say he’s the number one DJ in the world and blah blah blah, I just quietly disagree. He really isn’t that great IMO, from all his albums to even his live shows. But his most recent release Kaleidoscope has taken a different turn in that he has a ridiculous amount of cameos…most of ’em from the indie world. You guys probably remember the song with Tegan and Sara! Well, this one is killer. And I’m quiet impressed with the album. But he still remains pretty low on my DJ books.

MP3: Tiësto ft. Nelly Furtado – Who Wants To Be Alone

↓Just something that came up on my Mediamonkey one day…and I was like…oooooooh yeaaaaaaaaaaah!

MP3: Toploader – Dancing in the Moonlight

↓Trey Songz, coming up BIG in the R’n’B world.

MP3: Trey Songz – Say Aah

↓This is a ridiculously misogynistic song. But it’s so catchy. Damn American rap! So bad yet so goood.

MP3: Three 6 Mafia – Lil’ Freak (Ugh Ugh Ugh)

↓BIGGEST SONG OF THE WEEK! BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP! BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP!

MP3: Rick Ross – Baby By Me (Remix)

I’ve been listening to old school Outkast a lot lately, and just a few hours ago, I was in Café Bohemia, a super cool place where you can sip on coffee and browse vintage shiz. Best part, the music! They had Outkast’s Speakerboxxx blaring and I was havin’ a dance party yeeeeeeeeee! Anyways, Stankonia has been on repeat for me for the past week. Along with Raekwon, Ghostface, Wu-Tang, and old school Eminem. Oooooo WEE! Gettin’ back to the good ol’ stuff. I’m doing this post also in procrastination to update you guys on my last two days at POP MTL. Worry not young padawons, come, it will.

Here are two of my faves off Stankonia, enjoy!
