Hey y’all! Unforts I was unable to make SXSW but my friend Miyuru, an up and coming DJ here in Edmonton that has residency at the Starlite Room for Surely Temple Thursdays is making me uber jealous by being there. Good thing he’s agreed to give me (us) some updates on his shows/experience day to day! Woooohoo!
Thursday & Friday: Liver disease is imminent.
I admit I’m a SXSW virgin and this year was my first time at the festival. I had gone to CMJ in NYC this past October, so I knew what to expect somewhat as SXSW can be likened to CMJ just on a much much larger scale.
My first two days, I was somewhat keen on planning out my days and making sure to be at X venue at Y time. The last two days though, I gave up. Friday and Saturday are much harder to keep up with, because there are many more important shows to hit that overlap with each other, and the locals are out in full-force meaning long lines at most venues. Even your badge doesn’t help you out as much as you wish.
I didn’t even get into the Rachel Ray party after waiting 3 hours. But that’s ok, I met a million people in line who were supercool.
This post is going to be very different. I could tell you about all the acts that I’ve seen in the past couple days but really, there was nothing much out of the ordinary during the shows, except Metallica at Stubbs and Kanye’s appearance at the Fader Fort and Perez’s afterparty (both of which I didn’t make).
So, what did I do the last two days? I want to get this all down before I forget.

Wednesday: This has to have been the worst day of SXSW ever!
Yelle was ridiculous and dazzled the crowd with her fierce energy and oh-so-cute French accent! I love watching her and I’m glad I caught her because I missed her at Coachella. No new material in her set, and it still ends with A Cause Des Garcons which turns into the Tepr remix, all live, which is really cool and a hell of a dance party.

Tuesday: Too Many Parties–Kid Sister + Flosstradamus
Today I landed in San Antonio and got a ride to Austin and the first thing we did was pick up our badges and badges for the PureVolume party. Then we hit the Art Disaster party which was starting to fill up as they were giving out free vodka and screen-printing t-shirts on the fly for everyone. I saw the Minx Disaster or something like that, a local band from Austin which seemed to have a following judging from the crowd. Looking at the lineup there’s no band named that but I swear that’s what they said! Shunda K of Yo! Majesty was there between acts too as well with an insane dancer. After that we decided to hit the Rock You (sp?) party, where we caught Kid Sister and Flosstradamus absolutely kill it! With her album coming out real soon, there was a lot of new material to be heard starting with the new single “Get Fresh”. The track that stuck out the most was a new one produced by Yuksek (!), which makes me wonder who else contributed to the album. Datarock was playing afterwards but we decided to split to hit the PureVolume party for free beers.

SXSW. A festival of epic proportions that is true to the word epic. A nine day interactive festival that integrates media, music, and film. It starts tomorrow, March 13th and runs ’til March 22nd in Austin, Texas. I’m really sad I won’t be making it to this but I know quite a few lucky people who are so hopefully I can post some updates of their experience so we can all vicariously feel the wonders of over 1800 musical acts on over 80 different stages…I would go listing them but I fear that the capacity of this white text box would implode from too much awesomeness. Take a look at the musical acts…and uh, yeah, if the first page overwhelmed you, guess what? That was only one day of the schedule.
Will you be attending? Who are you excited for? Have you been before and what was your experience like? Do share! =)
